A few months ago I blogged about the homicide rates of foreign born Hispanics I mentioned the problem of Hispanics being younger than Whites, so in this blog I’ve decided to compare homicide rates by single-year age groups for both Whites and Hispanics.
In the chart some homicide rate values for single-year age groups are missing because there just aren’t that many homicides of people younger than 12 and the CDC suppresses data for groups with low death counts.
As pretty much everyone but academics and holocaust denying mamzers expect, Hispanic males are much more violent than whites (about three times the homicide rate), but the pattern that really jumps out at you is that unlike males, Latinas are barely more violent than White females.
It’s also worth it to chart the rates of foreign born and native born Hispanics since their age structures are so different. Foreign born Hispanics are more likely to be young adults, US born Hispanics teenagers, and Whites middle-aged adults.
I can only do this from 1997, the year the CDC started collecting Hispanic origin information for all states, to 2004, the last year geographic identifiers were included in the public microdata.
After adjusting for age, foreign born Hispanics tend to have a little lower homicide rates than U.S. born Hispanics. But because of their age structure they still have a higher crude rate.
Keep in mind that if you decide to move to Cesar Chavez street after reading this blog post, you just won’t be able to say: “Once you control for male bias and a younger age it’s not really that violent!” since the younger Hispanic age and male bias are the mechanisms which are raising the homicide rate and you will be better served using the crude rate.
There’s a script to download the microdata and filter it to only include homicides
